Can Qigong or Tai Chi help with Cancer?

Question by Conspicuous Cook: Can Qigong or Tai Chi help with Cancer?
I do voluntary work with cancer patients. A few have taken up tai chi since they know it’s an affordable method for dealing with health problems like arthritis. Does anyone know if Tai Chi or Qigong has been demonstrated to be effective for helping with cancer? I’ve done a bit of research and haven’t had much luck finding anything credible to go off. If you can cite sources to corroborate this or explain which methods specifically work, that would be most appreciated-not just for me but also all the brave souls I work with daily.

The basic answer to your question is “yes, do Dragon and Tiger,” and a large part of your question is answered here:

However, there are a few big specifics to hit on, which all boil down to a lack of knowledge in the West about the Taoist Energy Arts which I believe deserve mention.

Briefly, there are thousands upon thousands of qigong forms or methods. Some of them are very good, some are mediocre, some are useless, and some are actually harmful. Along the same lines, the difficulty of them varies immensely and many have been specialized to work with every specific problem imaginable. One of the main large fields within the Qigong family is medical Qigong, and one specialty in it which many forms have been developed for is dealing with cancer.

One of the classic trade offs with Qigong and Tai Chi is that the more “advanced, powerful, or effective” a form is, the harder it is to learn or be able to do for its full benefits. There are a few qigong forms which are “very good” but also easy to learn. It just so happens that Dragon and Tiger is one of the best examples, and happened to also be known for being extremely effective for mitigating certain bad energy patterns associated with cancer.

One of the main living Taoist Tai Chi Masters (Bruce Frantzis), chose a few forms that made the most sense to teach widely in the West, and Dragon and Tiger was one of them. I remember him say specifically that it was known by the Chinese Government as being one of most efficient methods for optimizing health, and Jiang Jua Hua (in inheritor of the form) at the behest of the Chinese Government taught it to around 20,000 instructors, who in turn taught it to a couple million people which allowed the Chinese government to objectively verify it’s efficacy. One thing the form was specifically known for was curing cancer, and Bruce Frantzis said during his stint in terminal cancer wards as a Qigong doctor that one of the main things they did to get remissions was teach dragon and tiger to the patients and make them practice daily.

There’s a lot more to this, but hopefully that’s what you’re looking for!

You would have to ask yourself what would be the mechanism by which gentle exercise kills cancer cells. The hypothesis lacks prior plausibility.

  3. a tao says:

Tai Chi helps people maintain balance, when a body is balanced it will need less physical energy to exist, freeing up resources for such things as dealing with cancer and cancer cures.
Whilst it may not be a cure, it will provide better life quality.
