How do I know if the local Kung Fu dojo is a good one?

Question by jjlank15: How do I know if the local Kung Fu dojo is a good one?
All I know is that it is a Shaolin Kung Fu place and that it offers Kickboxing lessons on the side.

I’m looking to learn mostly everything from kicking and punching and espescially the ability to parry. I would also like for it to be a little acrobatic because that sort of thing interests me.

If I asked, would they allow me to watch two of their students to spar?

The school I go to is completely open and anyone can walk in, sit down and watch any class. I would be extremely weary of any school that did NOT let you watch before you joined. Also, and really good school should have some kind of “introductory” package where you can take a couple of lessons with no commitment to see if you like the school.

  1. Mr. Yinyang says:

First, if they are referring to themselves as a dojo, they are NOT a kung fu school. Kung fu schools are called kwoons. Also, be wary if they are simply referring to themselves as a Shaolin school. That is a very broad term and covers a number of different styles. I would check to see if they teach a particular style such as Wing Chun, Hung Gar, or Eagle Claw for example. You should have to ask to see students spar. This should be a part of normal class which you can view anytime. I would also ask about the lineage of the teacher. Honestly, a good, traditional kung fu school can be difficult to find, but is worth the effort. I wish you the best on your journey.

For you to know if the local kung fu dojo is good…the practitioners in that dojo should be able to execute this type of moves
