This review is from M. K. Leiva

I practice Bikram Yoga 3-6 times a week. I have a yogi-toes towel and a similar knock-off brand and I agree with other reviewers who like a towel that stays in place (thanks to the little rubber nubs). I bought these towels because you get TWO for the price of one yogi-toes. They fit over my mat perfectly – actually about an inch longer than my mat. If you use them straight out of the packaging they don’t lay flat because of the folds but now that I’ve washed them, they lay perfectly flat and I don’t seem to have any trouble with them moving around or bunching up. (Perhaps those people who have this problem are moving around too much on the mat to begin with.) The best part about these towels is that they are WAY more absorbent than the yogi-toes and they dry much faster as well. I’m glad I bought these and not another expensive yogi-toes!

Bikram Yoga Mat

Can I stand hot yoga? That was the first question that came to mind when someone suggested I try Bikram Yoga. I’ve been practicing yoga at home but I’ve always done it at normal room temperature. It was challenging enough as it is to maintain focus and to keep balanced. How much harder could it be if I practiced it in a room heated to 38 degrees?

But when I read up on the health benefits I would get from practicing Bikram, I knew it was worth trying. Practicing Bikram Yoga has a lot of benefits and these are just some of them:

    * Weight loss

    * Strengthens the immune system

    * Detoxifies the body and improves blood circulation

    * Increases energy, decreases stress

    * Promotes mental clarity and focus

Naturally, weight loss was the main benefit I was after. After going through a three-day trial, I signed up for a daily class to see if it will deliver on its promised benefit.

I know it seems impossible to lose weight by just stretching your body and posing in place. But when you try Bikram, it brings yoga to a whole different level. It’s impossible to go through a whole session and not feel like you’ve lost a lot of weight.

During my first session, I immediately realized how tough this was going to be. I barely passed the half hour mark before streams of sweat started flowing all over. The heat made it challenging to really focus. You really have to muster all your mental and physical strength to concentrate on your breathing and to maintain your balance to keep yourself from fainting.

So did I get any benefit out of one workout?

I did feel the detoxifying effect after the session. Of course, my waist didn’t magically shrink right then and there, but I felt lighter after losing all that water weight.

One key thing to remember when doing yoga or any workout for that matter, you can’t expect to see the results over night. Yoga is not a quick fix to your weight loss woes but, when practiced consistently, it can deliver amazing benefits.

I practiced Bikram Yoga for one month and my efforts did pay off in the end. My waistline shrunk by three inches and I felt even stronger and healthier. When it comes to weight loss, I tend to focus more on the inches I lost and how I feel because, for me, that’s a more satisfying result.

Other benefits I noticed were the added flexibility and over all vitality. I was feeling more energized and the little aches I used to feel were gone. No need for diets or pills because eating healthy became a habit during my practice. Of course, I was putting in so much time and effort in my practice, I wanted to maximize the effects by making sure I ate foods that nourished my body.

With increased focus and mental clarity, I hardly experienced any stress and I found that I handled daily difficulties quite well.

Is Bikram Yoga right for you?

Considering that Bikram involves practicing in a heated room, it may not be right for everyone. Do your due diligence and consult your doctor first before you enroll in a class. Try to go for a trial too to see if you can handle it.

Remember though that it takes consistent practice to see the results and enjoy the benefits BIkram Yoga has to offer. It is definitely tough and it can push you to your limits. But once you’ve done it, the weight loss, health and mental benefits are more than worth it.
