It can be hard to find mat cleaners, as they are not often carried in stores.  You can find them online, and they can cost anywhere from $8-$12 for an 8 ounce bottle, but what are they made out of, and how safe are they for you and your mat?  Well, now you can take control over your yoga mat cleanser by making your own.

Now you can be free from that funky smell of a dirty yoga mat. What you’ll need is a spray bottle, water, witch hazel, tea tree oil, and essential oils (whatever appeals to you). Tea tree oil contains natural antimicrobial properties, so this will not only make your Yoga mat smell nice, it will also disinfect your Yoga mat naturally.  Remember that you’re only using a small amount of your essential oils, so that little, seemingly pricey bottles will be economical in the long run. Most health food stores have essential oils to purchase along with small guides about which ones are safe for the skin and/or which make good cleansers.

If you practice yoga on a regular basis in Vancouver you’ve probably invested in some expensive mat cleaners to break up sweat, dirt and odors, and prevent bacterial and fungal growth. Why not make your own natural cleaner that costs much less and is free of harsh chemicals?

If your mat is super soiled, you can toss it in into your washing machines. Just make sure it’s on the cold and gentle cycle, and don’t put it in the dryer as heat wills breakdown your mat.

Alternatively, you can give it a good washing in your bathtub. Use a very mild soap and hand wash in a tub filled with a couple inches of water. Gently scrub with a brush as necessary to remove dirt and stains. Rinse with clean water and hang to dry.

To speed the drying process, wrap your Rubber yoga mat around a dry towel to soak up excess moisture. Just unroll and separate from the towel before hanging to dry. Your mat can take a day to fully dry after the submerging treatment.

To create your own natural, cost effective cleaner you’ll first need a small spray bottle and a soft cloth or sponge. Then, you have a few options depending on what you currently have in your pantry:

1 cup water

1/3 cup white vinegar OR baking soda OR witch hazel

8 drops tea tree oil

Optional: 6 drops of other essential oils (lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, peppermint, whatever you’re like)

Here’s what yoga journal suggests for cleaning your mat (I was glad to look this up as I wasn’t sure beyond the “light cleaning”)

If your mat is lightly soiled, use a spray bottle, damp sponge, or terry cloth rag to apply a solution of two cups of water and four drops of dish soap. Rub the soiled areas. Wipe the mat with clean water; then rub with a dry terry cloth towel. Hang to air dry.

If your mat is heavily soiled, submerge it in a solution of warm water and mild detergent; use very little soap as any residue may cause the mat to become slippery during future use. Thoroughly hand wash the mat and rinse in clean water. After squeezing out the excess water, lay the mat on a dry towel and roll the mat and towel together. Stepping on the rolled up mat will squeeze more moisture out of the mat and into the towel. Then unroll and hang to air dry.
