How would Yoga supplement my weight lifting routine?

Question by Shredder: How would Yoga supplement my weight lifting routine?
I workout with weights heavily on a 4-day split and was looking for something new in between rest days. What are the benefits of yoga or some sort of stretching regimen? How would it specifically benefit someone who lifts weights at a very high intensity 4 times a week? Sorry, I don’t really know anything about yoga to be honest…

Depending on what type of yoga you are looking to do it will vary a bit but generally, yoga helps you to balance your entire body. Muscles, nerves, mind and spirit.

I’ve noticed that my temper and patience have improved a lot after starting doing yoga. I also believe yoga can balance your physical body so that you can lift more and do more reps.

If you are seeking to do a form of yoga that is flexible then your muscles will have a broader range. It means that a non Flexible muscle might be strong but when it’s stretched to a certain point it gets weak. A flexible muscle will be strong even if it’s stretched.

Take knee press for example. If you have short and non flexible muscles you will find that you there is a point when you lower the weights that you have no power. If you have flexible muscles you can go beyond this point and still have the feeling of power.

Doing yoga will also stimulate the lymph system and lymph fluid. This means that your body will regenerate itself faster and the organs, glands and muscles will rejuvenate faster and allow you to exercise more/harder.

On the mental side it will bring you more focus being able to follow through with what you intend.

There are much more benefits and I could go on forever. Test it and see what it does for you!

New to Yoga. Should I get a 1/2″ thick mat?

Question by Mr Questions: New to Yoga. Should I get a 1/2″ thick mat?
I’m around 5′7″ and weigh around 200lbs…..
I’m planning on doing some exercises in which Yoga is incorporated into the routine.
I have hardwood floors.
Should I get a 1/2″ thick yoga mat? If so would I need to buy a special bag to put it in since it would be thicker than a regular mat or should I just hang it somewhere when I’m not using it?

Thx
@Dave….so is that a “yes” ?

I would get a padded mat, not the one they sell for yoga, but one from the sporting goods store for comfort, and also a few little pillows, and a yoga brick. Also, don’t sign a contract, and don’t let the teacher force you to do any position involving forward body work if you have a bad back. So, I vote for a thicker, more padded mat, not the flat, less resilient one, they sell as a yoga mat. Mine wraps up and has elastic to keep it easy to carry, but I could sew a carrier, if necessary. Good luck. Personally, I love the Pilate’s classes way more. It makes me feel like a million bucks.

Question by Sandy S: What are the various Yoga poses that are helpful for all our organs?

Question by Fauna: For beginning yoga supplies: do I need 2 blocks or is 1 ok…?
I’m trying to figure out what I need to start out. I’m ordering a 1/4 inch thick sticky yoga mat, a nylon mat bag, a cotton 6′ strap with plastic buckle, a 4″ foam block, from www.yogaacessories.com.
Is that ok to start? Do you have better suggestions? Thanks! :)
