Question by Intuitive Dreamer: How old are people in India on average when they learn yoga?
I am just wondering how old people normally are when they start practicing yoga in India. I know its more common to do there and I am curious if they start when they are children or what. Does anyone know if Buddhists or monks or anything practice their entire lives?

I guess its the same as anywhere else in the world. I was born in India and my mother taught me baby yoga, she manipulated my limbs to stretch the muscles to help with development, I’ve always been aware of yoga posture’s and breathing techniques but didn’t start a full on daily practice until well into my teens. Most Buddhists and Monks I know don’t practice yoga its very much a personal choice and isn’t as popular in India as it once was a result I think of India’s shift to a more western and materialistic mindset.

Question by Hannah M: What are the pros and cons of heated and non-heated yoga?
I want to take a hot yoga class, and I was wondering which you think is better, and what the pros and cons are of both? What are your experiences?

Well, I know heated.. the amount of sweating you do is like, unbeliveable. After one class you’re ready to go home and drink 5 gallons of water. But my friend lost 30 pounds doing it, so it’s very efficient for some people. It’s not exactly easy though, it sort of gets..unbearable.
I find non-heated more..serene and calm, though. Depends on what you’re looking for — some really fast weight loss, or a calmer, slower process.

Question by patsy36ss: Can someone give me a breakdown of the different types of yoga?
I don’t know much about any of it, but am interested. I’ve heared of hatha yoga, but I know there are many different forms or types of it. Can someone break this down for me a little bit, and explain what each includes?

I’m definitely not an expert, but the types I know of are Hatha, Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Bikram. Hatha is more about individual strength and flexibility poses, while Ashtanga focuses on series of poses that flow from one to the next, possibly more spiritual. Bikram is where the room is very hot and you get very flexible. Not really sure of the tenets of Iyengar, all I know is that it was founded by the yogi B.K.S. Iyengar.

Question by mrr86: What kind of exercise do you recommend I try, pilates or yoga?
I want to buy an exercise video, because I want to tone up and lose some weight. I go to the gym, but I just started, and I would like to be able to fit something in on the days I cannot make it to the gym. I have a chubby stomach, and big thighs. Do you recommend I try a pilates video, or a yoga video? Or maybe you have other suggestions?
